Technically ‘Perdido Key’ directly translates to ‘Lost Key’. This gorgeous island got its name from the early Spanish that discovered it in 1693. Once you reach the island, you will be simply swept away by its amazing beauty. It will be like finding a lost beauty.

The island has a laid back atmosphere with plenty of estuaries, wetlands and wildlife. The island, which is located in the extreme northwest corner of the state, is truly worth the visit with plenty to offer for visitors. The area is home to beautiful beaches and amazing parks just waiting to be explored. Visitors will not only gain access to the pristine beaches,but they will also have access to the Gulf of Mexico. There are parks available that provide visitors with plenty of attractions. You can enjoy a hike through the area, go swimming, fishing or biking.

Wildlife to the area includes the endangered Perdido beach mouse, the sea turtle, as well as shorebirds such as gulls, black skimmers, brown pelicans and terns.

Attractionsin the area include:

The Gulf Islands National Seashore which is great for walking, biking, jogging or simply enjoying the beautiful views of the sunsets. It is also a great spot to indulge in a bit of kayaking, jet skiing or fishing;

Big Lagoon State Park and recreational area which is home to a number of animals and birds such as raccoons, gray foxes, great blue herons, opossums and skunks among others;

Perdido Key State Park is a habitat for shore birds and a number of coastal animals in addition to being the buffer against threatening tides and winds to the island.

You can enjoy a bit of snorkeling, surf fishing or chase Hermit Crabs on the beach. If diving or snorkeling is your passion, then you will appreciate the beautiful underwater life being offered at the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

There are plenty of art galleries and unique shops available where you can do some shopping. You can visit with the haunted lighthouse, pay a visit to the historic Fort Barrancas, Fort McRee and Fort Morgan or you can visit the historical Pensacola district.

You can take part in a number of events available on the island and you can taste some of the mouthwatering dishes on the island such as the delicious crap legs or oysters.
